ABOUT EMILY LATKA:
Emily has lived and worked in Los Angeles for ten years, first working in live daytime television, before moving into the agency world. She has worked in both voice over and on-camera commercial, with buyers and producers from every department possible: commercial, promo, narration, trailer, animation and interactive. Currently she is a voice over agent at A3 (the newly rebranded Abrams Artists Agency) with a large focus on commercial and promo. She’s booked clients for AT&T, Sony PlayStation, Doritos, LucasFilm, and Skechers, as well as promos on ABC, CBS, FOX, FOX Sports, Netflix, Disney Jr, and numerous cable networks, just to name a few. She has a strong, loud personality and can not only lead a room, but truly give an actor the confidence needed to book commercially in voice over.
What will this Commercial Voiceover Class cover?
Week 1: Agent Q&A and discussion of VO commercials
The commercial landscape is bigger than ever and for an actor, reading for and booking VO commercials can be a huge skill in their arsenal. Start with a discussion about the different types of commercials (including promos!) and get insight into how an agent thinks, what it means to excel in VO commercials, and most importantly, finding your “spec and sound.” Towards the end of the class, all actors will be given a piece of copy to cold read and then additional copy to take home and study.
Week 2: Deep dive into copy
Actors will read the piece of copy given as homework from week 1. Emily will give tips, tricks, and guidance to each actor and in front of the whole group, to get a better understanding of what a producer is looking for. Is a spec confusing? Too broad? Too narrow? This week is a deep dive into the world of specs, timing, tone, and delivery. More copy given to actors, to play around with for the following week.
Week 3: Practice, practice, practice… and more copy
Actors will read the copy given as homework from week 2. Every actor will be given additional copy to cold read, now that Emily has evaluated your voice and vibe. This week is where the actors will really start to feel out their sound, to compile the copy they most think represents them. Start thinking of your reel. Who are you? What do you want an agent or producer to hear?
Week 4: Preparing to record a solid reelJust as you need a solid headshot and resume for on-camera work, you absolutely need a solid reel to catch a VO agent’s attention. First during a final Q&A, what makes a good demo? What copy over the last few weeks have you gravitated towards most, and why? Let’s fully plan your demo, what pieces you’re going to read, in the right order.
Week 5: Recording a reel
Take everything you’ve learned over the course of four weeks and bring it into the recording studio to lay down your brand new one-minute demo reel. In the event that the recording studio is not able to reopen by the final class date, students will be given the option to home-record demo material to be edited by our sound engineer, or wait for an appointment in the recording studio once it is able to safely reopen.
PLEASE NOTE: You will get 1 FREE track mixed with music. Additional tracks are charged at $49.99 each.
